LOS ANGELES – The Boys & Girls Club of Venice will announce its 2011 Youth of the Year winner at a special ceremony presented by Microsoft on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011 at Digital Domain in Venice. The winner will be among hundreds of local Youths of the Year selected across the country. This year’s finalists are Angelique Paul of Venice High School, Christopher Rojas of Ánimo Venice Public Charter High School and Xiaoxiong Xiao of Venice High School.
“We are extremely proud of our finalists’ academic performance and community commitment,” said the club’s executive director Erikk Aldridge. “They, along with our past Youth of the Year honorees, prove that the value of a Club membership is immeasurable.”
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club. The program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation.
The Boys & Girls Club of Venice’s 2011 Youth of the Year judges were board member Linda Weber, Tim Enstice of Digital Domain, Gail Goldstein representing Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary, Sierra Domaille of Nike and Corinne Weitzman of the Wise Family Foundation.
In addition to recognizing the Youth of the Year, the Club will be presenting a Community Leader Award to outgoing board member and Coldwell Banker Real Estate executive Pat Kandel. The Club will also recognize its members that recently participated in the club’s fine arts competition.
The recipient of Youth of the Year award will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Los Angeles County Youth of the Year. Ultimately there will be five regional winners who will travel to Washington, D.C., in September 2011 to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the President in an Oval Office ceremony.
