Hundreds of Venetians came out Saturday, February 13, 2016 to mourn the passing of one of their own. Sadly, Brian Zarate and his dog Marisol were killed in a car accident on Jan. 30. The memorial service was held on the beach by the graffiti walls. There was a mural of Brian painted on the walls by Doug Smith and Jules Muck, as well as a photo memorial. Josh “Bagel” Klassman, Tonan, Victor Blue and others took turns telling stories about their adventures with Brian. The crowd was deeply moved with folks laughing and crying throughout. The service was followed by a paddle out on the north side of the Venice Breakwater, one of Brian’s favorite surf spots. Flowers were thrown, the water pounded, the life guard boat spouted from its hose and people yelled and cheered Brian’s life. And, of course, folks shredded the waves in honor of Brian.
