Venice Beach Music Fest 6: Free, fun day in the sun on Saturday, August 13, 2011
The sixth annual Venice Beach Music Fest is a fun day of music and art at the beach on Saturday, August 13, 2011. This event, which is free to the public, continues its tradition of keeping the creative spirit of Venice vibrant by creating a venue for local musicians, dancers, poets, and artists. The festival is located in Windward Plaza Park, adjacent to the world famous Venice boardwalk at the west end of Windward Avenue (1 Windward Avenue, Venice, CA 90291). In addition to a full day of music, a large art show will feature some of the best Venice artists displaying original sculpture, photographs, and paintings. Dancers perform between bands’ sets in the morning and early afternoon. The festivities begin at 11 a.m. and end at 7:30 p.m.
The all-day musical entertainment reflects a diverse range of styles, including folk, heavy metal, bluegrass, drumming, acoustic, experimental, and rock and roll. There were live performances by: Street Smart, The Broken Numbers Band, Concepto Tambor, Djinn, Grapes & Nuts, Michael Jost and Friends, Trevor Menear, and Damaged Kids. Some special guests might surprise the audience as well.
Two different types of bellydance were represented at the festival. American Tribal Style (ATS) Bellydance and Drums brought their costumed dance, and Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater performed in the folkloric style between musical sets in the late morning and early afternoon.
Artists that displayed in the art show included: Michael R. Oddo, art by SKY, Jean Paul, David Hinnebusch, Richard Yaker, Martha C Wilson, Ra Ra SuperStar, Joe Reese, Juan Carlos, Joel Harris, and the Infusion Project.
This free, annual community event was entirely sponsored by local businesses: Lincoln Hardware, Al and Ed’s Autosound, Venice Beach Suites, Venice Boardwalk Association, The Sidewalk Cafe, Fresh Brothers Pizza, Planet LA Records, Rev 7, Cadillac Hotel, Lincoln Fabrics, Venice Ale House, Organic Oasis, Zelda’s Deli, Big Daddy’s, Animal House, Moses Jewelry, Danny’s Venice, Canal Club, Brady Walker F.A.D.E., and Venice Paparazzi. The Organic Oasis food truck will be on site selling smoothies and special treats. The event is endorsed by Venice Chamber of Commerce.
