Did you know that it is illegal to dance inside certain venues in Venice?
That’s right, technically the bars and night clubs in the V must have a cabaret license in order for the DJ to crank it up and the crowd to cut the rug! Sound crazy? It is!
It was part of prohibition, which, while prohibition was repealed, these laws to curtail dancing and music remained! New York City just repealed these same cabaret laws.

Venice was a center for dancing in Los Angeles, but the zealot powers wanted to shut down the bohemian vibe. Now, the #1 tourist destination in Southern California has almost no live music and dancing venues.
So, let’s get rid of this silly rule. Here is the plan!
Our buddies Daniel Samakow and James Evans, owner of Canal Club and James’ Beach, are spearheading an effort and we need you to join in. They are trying to get a license to boogie for the Canal Club, and in doing so shine a light on this out dated law, hopefully enough to either get it abolished or at least have the level playing field.
Want to help?
Support Daniel, James and Venice by coming out this Monday, June 25th, to the zoning hearing for the Canal Club, which is trying to get a permit to have dancing.
Here is a message from James and Daniel:
Dear Friends,
We’ve been writing about how after Prohibition was finally repealed, restrictive prohibition cabaret laws were left in place, causing the numerous live music and dancing venues that once thrived in Venice to remain shuttered.
Venice is the #1 tourist destination in Southern California with a history of exciting music and entertainment. Visitors from around the world now stay in Venice after the sun sets to partake of our restaurants and culture; yet we have almost no venues for live entertainment and dancing.
We’ve been responsible restaurant and bar operators in Venice for over 20 years, and are seeking to obtain a cabaret license at Canal Club, so we can offer live music and dancing to our community and its visitors.
Please support us by coming out to the hearing, this Monday, June 25, 9:30 am
Please come arrive early!
