Venice Mardi Gras – Today As Yesterday
Resplendent and musical Venetians turned out Saturday with drums, trombones and feathered finery for the 10th Annual Krewe Of Grandview Mardi Gras Parade. Weekend visitors on that beautiful sunny afternoon were delighted by a spectacle that far eclipsed the usual Ocean Front Walk array of colorful characters. This wonderful event, like Carnevale, pays homage to a Venice tradition that dates back to 1935. War clouds were rising but America was trying to pack up its troubles and party out of the post-Prohibition Depression era. The accent then like today was on, at least momentarily, fun & foolishness. With some beautiful girls and beads tossed in of course!
