About NeueHouse: NeueHouse Venice Beach has its’ doors at 73 Market Street—a new work, social, and cultural hub for the Venice creative community, with an exquisite rooftop restaurant, light-filled bar, and expanded amenities for the Venice set.
A brief Venice history lesson: In the mid-1970s, Oscar-winning director/producer Tony Bill purchased 73 Market in Venice Beach, where he created a haven for artists, writers, filmmakers, and creators to come together, collaborate, and collide. Bill’s hub, which lasted well into the ‘80s, was actually just the latest chapter in a decades-long lineage of creative innovation born on Market, a historic two-block stretch just off the boardwalk. This colorful tradition is the inspiration for NeueHouse Venice Beach, the new home for Venice’s creative community to come together under (and on) one roof. Join us for a brief foray into the rich creative legacy of our newest house.
NeueHouse Venice Beach is proud to screen three short films from black directors in celebration of Black History Month, co-presented with Venice Beach Film Festival.
THE VACATION, by director Jarreau Carrillo, tells the story of a group of friends taking a trip to the beach on the last day of the summer. But, when their car won’t stop they are forced to take their vacation in their car. THE VACATION was screened at Sundance Film Festival, where Jarreau won the Special Jury Award for Directing.
WE WERE MEANT TO, by director Tari Wariebi, depicts a world where Black men have wings, and their first flight is a rite of passage, Akil must defy fears, insecurities, and societal barriers while discovering his perfect launch into manhood.
Tari Wariebi is a first-generation Liberian, Nigerian-American filmmaker from Philadelphia, PA and is the recipient of the Gary Winnick Scholarship and Jack Larson Scholarship for Directing during his time at the American Film Institute.
OURIKA!, by Xenia Matthews, is a short about Ourika, a Senegalese girl enslaved by a French aristocrat. When Ourika is awoken in the eerie space between life and death, between body and soul, she finds her way back to life and into liberation. OURIKA! was screened at Sundance Festival 2023.
Xenia is an innovative film and visual artist whose work explores personal experiences of black womanhood, the body, and the soul.
