The Venice Sign went dark on March 25th for Earth Hour in show of support for protecting the planet. #ChangeClimateChange.
On March 25, 2017 Sustainable Venice initiated the inaugural #LightsOutVenice, asking the Venice Chamber of Commerce to hit the lights on our iconic #VeniceSign! It marked the beginning of a tradition of bringing our unique community together to stand in solidarity with Earth Hour.
About Earth Hour: WWF started Earth Hour in 2007 to unite the world and make a stand against climate change. Today, Earth Hour is the world’s largest environmental movement for the planet that involves 178 countries and territories worldwide. Earth Hour is more than an hour-long event. Our purpose is to empower an interconnected global community to achieve tangible environmental outcomes for our living planet. earthhour.org
Here is a message from Sustainable Venice: March 25th 2017 marked the historical beginning of what will inevitably be a tradition worth celebrating. Earth Hour is more than just turning off the lights in iconic locations. It’s a movement; an awareness to #ChangeClimateChange and stand in solidarity with those who want to take action.
Climate change is real and it effects everyone. It holds no judgments to ones race, age, religion, or gender. It is borderless; non-discriminatory.
A movement such as Earth Hour is like any other in that it seeks to empower people and show them how they can make small, but mighty, changes in their behavior for the greater good.
Flipping the switch on the iconic Venice Sign is just that… a switch in behavior change. Sometimes it’s that easy, sometimes it’s not. But, in doing so you can build yourself, and others, up and stand in solidarity for the things that you feel so impassioned to protect.

A little Venice Sign History!
.
Spanning across Windward Avenue at Pacific, the VENICE Sign in lights is a modern day replica of the one originally installed in 1905 by the legendary Abbot Kinney. It is a defining symbol of Venice, past and present. In 2007, the Venice Sign Restoration Project recreated and installed the contemporary version of this historic sign. Since that time the Venice Chamber has been responsible for the sign and for protecting its trademark. View pics of the Venice Sign below!
